‘hikari no tokei’ gate by tha ltd., 2010

the japanese design firm tha ltd. recently completed a massive clock installation in tokyo named ‘hikari no tokei’
or clock of light. the design was created for the entrance for the seibu ikebukuro flagship store. the clock is located
on all four sides of a large pillar, consisting of 4 giant led surfaces. these displays show the current time in an array
of motion typography that changes each second. at every hour, the monument makes time-announcements with
synchronized music and motion. the project was a collaboration between yugo nakamura and naoki nishimura of
tha ltd with creative director masaaki hiromura, music by yukihiro takahashi, interior design by tonerico inc and
komaden corporation on engineering.

Lighting 구조 참고

 

Liberty and Staircase by designer Danny Kuo are the two pieces in hi graduation work from the Design Academy Eindhoven, which was exhibited at the Graduation show 2010 during Dutch Design Week.

Staircase
Building vertically saves space as it uses minimal ground square meters. When it comes to interior design, the same rule can be applied. By focusing on height rather than width, efficient storage designs can be created. Even though this would be more efficient, it does create the problem of making this height accessible. Staircase is a shelving unit that combines a bookshelf with a pullout stair system in the bottom three shelves. The shelving unit is 2.6 meters high and the top shelves are accessible by using the bottom shelves as steps for accessing the higher shelves.

Liberty
Current developments in the lighting industry are changing the way lamps are designed. From the familiar light bulb to fluorescent lamp to LED to OLED. Especially LED and OLED bring freedom, flexibility and adaptability for new lighting. To Danny, minimum size and the related flexibility are most inspiring and interesting.

But how can we benefit from these new qualities? Danny Kuo has designed a lamp that is dynamic and which is functional in different situations. The lamp’s light angle is able to adjust up to 180 degrees and the dimmer offers adjustabilty of the light intensity. These improvements in flexibility make the lamp adaptable for the different contexts of the space in which the lamp is used.

Panning The Bin

There is one job that I don’t really have to do: sweeping. Why? Because I’m blessed with maid-service and my house-help really does a darn good job of it. So when I showed my help this Bin Pan, she was eager with excitement, pestering me to bring in one for the home. It is a clever design, to integrate the pan with the dustbin. It looks nice and works well, both at home and at office! Guess I owe her this one! One Bin Pan coming up!

Strollin into the Future

Babies brush your shoulders off, you’re about to be rolling in the most pimp baby vehicle I’ve ever set my sights on. This project is called “Stroller Bumbel” and it’s a whole new look at transporting babies from place to place. Designer Ascanio Afan de Rivera asks why the baby stroller form has only gone a few steps from its origin in all its years of existence? Why oh why? Even when the original isn’t broken, there’s room for improvement. Or at least experimentation. Here’s a new one for ye.

This stroller adapts. Working as a different bit of containment for kids from birth until they’re 2 years old. Based on an 11 piece system that folds into several different forms as well as collapsing down into a trunk-ready smaller size.

The Everlasting Baby Pram

The new-age prams are a step-up from the old-gen and transform to become strollers but beyond that I don’t think any designer has come up with ingenious ideas to extend their useful life. Babyoom is what I’d like to call useful thinking, with all probabilities of becoming a cherished family heirloom passed down generations! From ages 0 to 3 it serves as a faithful baby buggy and car seat; from ages 3 to 6 it transforms to a children’s cycle; and beyond that it can be used as a shopping cart for all your shopping sprees.

The lightweight body and easy steps to assemble make this concept a winner. The beauty is that one frame is used for all the 3 setups. If this was around when I had my kids, I know I would have bought it for them.

ike an M.C. Escher drawing that has no end, neither will your design ideas with the Versatile Wall Tiles Collection by designer Yigit Ozer. This design concept is essentially a wide V shaped tile that has just the right proportions to allows for a multitude of pattern ideas to be arranged. Making this a simple and unique way to highlight any flat surface. Now can someone point me to the door?

Stroller Suitcase

On my flight from Tokyo to India, I did see some couples struggle with their baby strollers once they boarded the aircraft. I guess the time has come that we get an all-in-one thing that folds up into a suitcase and can be stowed in the overhead luggage compartment. Maybe something like the Polyvogue! This foldable stroller should have been a contender for the Samasonite Baby Luggage Contest, but nevertheless it’s a neat idea that can go into production and that’s what matters.

It has the seat range of a cot to a chair and apt for children under 3 years. Like most current strollers, the handlebar can be changed from front to back, giving the baby a variation in views.

No Scratch Watch

The Swatch concept watch by designer Allan George is basically aimed at the youth who like to wear trendy fashion, but maybe rough with it. Although latest scratch-proof glass materials are used in Omega, Rolex and ilk, but not all brands use this for their entire collection. And a watch with scratches on its glass looks so lame! Allan’s concept simple does away with the glass face and replaces it with a plastic-rubber finish. The colored hands peep out, behind a transparent rim, giving the watch a trendy and easy look!

Evolutive Design Collection by Nistor & Nistor

와우 이런거가 정말 내가 만들고자 하는 키네틱 라이팅과 딱 맞는 컨셉인데.. 누가 먼저 해버렸네.

Gladys Nistor sent me over photos of the Nistor & Nistor Evolutive Design Collection, which features lamps with elements that can individually rotate up to 360° around their axis and create an infinite variety of shapes. Nistor & Nistor are siblings Gladys and Gabriel who have very different backgrounds: Gladys as a sculptor, and Gabriel as a High Tech Industrial Engineer.

The idea behind their designs was to create a playful and interactive collection that invites the user to reshape it. Gladys says, “The lines where inspired from the concentric unbalances from MAD Architecture on his project ‘Urban Forest,’ combined with the simple elegance on a Coco Channel Nº 5 flacon or the classic smoothness on Artdeco design in general.” Gabriel explains that they also wanted to create a piece that had a longer lifespan that a normal item — “The longer the time the object communicates with you and surprises you, the longer you will want to keep it, which in turn contributes to reduce waste as well as resources consumption levels.”

The collection consists of three lamps: Magna, Opus, and Tempo.

Etch by Tom Dixon

During the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Tom Dixon presented his Etch collection, which was part of his Flash Factory. Visitors could buy a light or candleholder at the stand, or made of brass or stainless steel. The parts were made by employing an industrial process used to produce electronic products, including circuit boards. The patterns were directly etched on the thin metal sheets. This production technique allows the designer to produce a small bath of high-tech products in a very short time. But also the distribution model at the Flash Factory was quite interesting. The objects were offered in 3 versions: a pre-assembled one by one of the Flash Factory workers, or you could assemble it yourself at the stand and the last option was to buy a flat packed one and assemble it at home.
