Dog, Luggage And You On The Same Scale

The truth of the matter is that weighing dogs & luggage on a domestic weigh machine is cumbersome to the point of being impractical. So what’s the solution? How about a sleek scale that expands its base to accommodate anything from a small sized pug, to humans, to great danes & huge suitcases. Say hello to your bathroom friendly Scale Z! Besides its stunning physical attributes, this baby is capable of recognizing your feet (not from their stink!) and pull out your past records like weight, BMI etc, record the new readings and send it to your computer via Wi-Fi.

All this fuss is to make sure you manage and follow-up your weight loss program efficiently.

I definitely see this gracing my room.

Whoa! Men To Pee and Wash In The Same Stand!

I’m not a man so I really don’t know how comfortable you guys are going to be with this thought…peeing and washing hands in the same urinal stand! What Designer Yeongwoo Kim has done is incorporated the wash basin just above the spot you take aim to pee. The reason cited is that you’ll save a water flush cycle, coz when you rinse your hand after the job (I hope you guys do that!), the same gray water can be used to cleanse the urinal basin. Tell me, how many of you guys will be comfortable with this? For once, my opinion doesn’t count, but I do find it funny!

Make A Paperclip Nest

I want this like yesterday. The aptly names Nest is a magnetic shaped egg you need to coddle and care for by building a nest of paperclips. Keeps it stable and like any good mother, you may get a wonderful surprise after a few months. I’m totally kidding about that although if anything hatches, please write me. That deserves a story.

One Wrench to Rule Them Each

직업상 렌찌를 자주 사용하는데 매번 사이즈 틀린 렌찌를 찾곤 한다..

제품디자이너면서도 왜 이런 생각을 못했을까? ^^;

Or twist them all. In the dark! That’s what designer Junjie Zhang has on the brain, that intention in this project. This is a wrench that’s got several settings in one single piece of non-moving metal. One hunk. Tell me about this project, if you know about something similar, because it seems too simple to be true. One wrench, one shape that allows for several bolts to be twisted. Twisted all the way tight.

Now this designer just had another design featured on Yanko: the V Lock v-shaped keyhole slip, made for easy fitting of the key in the hole. This too, I thought was too simple to not have been invented before. But nay! It was new! And in 5 days the post had visits in the 5-digit range.

Now look at this wrench. I’ve got a wrench that fits several bolts now, it utilizes a screw at the head for easy adjustment of the wrench, which has two parts. The one we’re looking at here is one piece. One single piece. That cuts down on the amount of different molds that have to be made, maybe even cuts down on the amount of production time.

Where Is My Seat? Oh, Now I See It

우리나라 학생작품인데.. 공공디자인에서도 특히 가려져있던 이런 티켓디자인또한 이처럼 바뀌어야 할 필요가 있을거 같다..

아래작품을 보면 정말 한눈에 들어올듯.. 영화표에서도 적용하면 좋은 반응이 있을듯..

These days we can choose our own seats over the internet for airplanes and train travel, thus we know exactly where our seat is going to be. At least for that moment we do know. However in a practical scenario, many people don’t check-in online or our memories fail us on the date of travel. Where Is My Seat? is a concept where a pictograph of your seat location is printed onto the boarding pass. All I can say that it’s more helpful than just printing seat 34A, Economy Class.

Curious Displays

너무 컨셉적이긴 하지만 재미있어서 스크랩 ^^

Curious Displays is the thesis project of Julia Yu Tsao (Sept 2009), a concept that explores our future relationship with displays in the home. What if our display was ‘alive’, like little swarming bugs? What if your nano display was intelligent, connected to objects in your house and your communications?

“Curious Displays is a product proposal for a new platform for display technology. Instead of a fixed form factor screen, the display surface is instead broken up into hundreds of ½ inch display blocks. Each block operates independently as a self-contained unit, and has full mobility, allowing movement across any physical surface. The blocks operate independently of one another, but are aware of the position and role relative to the rest of the system. With this awareness, the blocks are able to coordinate with the other blocks to reconfigure their positioning to form larger display surfaces and forms depending on purpose and function.”

Of course it would get very annoying if you are watching Finding Nemo and it starts running around the room, but the project shows a different approach to ambient displays ubiquitous computing. The production of this concept, (animation by shadedbox, sound Jason Chung), is done to a high standard, making these tiny displays feel alive.

So how would we control these displays of the future? Tsao suggests:

“The user would need control of not just the usual channels and volume, but movement, functionality, and behavior, as well. What types of buttons would we have to have for the system? Would there be an array of buttons for different shapes and aspect ratios? For different types of functionality? For different display personalities, even? ”

Tired of these little guys following you around all day, demanding your attention? Then whack the kill switch in your back pocket.

Alley Traffic Lights

We don’t often think of congested alleys but in Korea they’re some of the busiest intersections where over 40% of accidents occur. Like a traffic light, the AISA is a 3 or 4 way signal. It’s made of titanium alloy with a round shape  to disperse direct forces. Small camera based sensors detect whenever foot, bike, or motor traffic approach and warns cross traffic with flashing LEDS. The color indicates the degree of danger and the flashing rhythm denotes speed. It’s not meant to control the flow of traffic like a stop light but it does give you a sense of what’s coming ahead.

Andrew Kim's square Coke bottle design

한국인 학생 디자이너가 제안한 패키지 디자인.

미국에서 반응이 매우 좋은가 봐요. 기사까지 뜨고~ ㅎ

아이디오또한 참신하네요~

CCS student Andrew Kim's Coke bottle redesign is an ambitious take on the iconic bottle, going square in the name of eco-friendliness. The new bottle shape would take up far less space in shipping pallets per bottle, and a push-up in the bottom large enough to accommodate the cap of the bottle beneath it would enable stacking. Said cap is offset for better drinkability.

Another interesting design feature is that underneath the label, the bottle is ribbed so that it can compress like an accordion, taking up even less space when it's time to go into the recycling truck.

As a former structural package designer myself, my first thought was that the strength needed for stackability wouldn't jive with a crushable bottle, but then I realized the bottle could be designed so that it's strong when surrounded on all sides--like when they're being shipped en masse--but collapsible when the bottle is alone, absent the pressure of surrounding bottles. Good stuff, and even more impressive considering Kim is a freshman!

뭔가 수학적이면서도 감각적인.. 그 단층에 컬러로 표현한것도 얼핏 보면 그라데이션 효과도 나고

Running Out Of USB Ports?

모든 USB 케이블이 이렇게 표준화되서 통일화 한다면 노트북같은 휴대기기에 USB포트가 많이 없어지겠는데 ㅎ

One of the limitations on notebooks is the lack of USB ports in proportion to the number of devices we would like to hook up. An easy remedy these days is the USB Hub, but YD won’t be YD if we showcased run-of-the-mill solutions! So here’s the Infinite USB – an alternative plug on devices that kinda acts like a tag team. The design speaks for itself, so no point elaborating, however what we can do is talk about its effectiveness and limitations. For starters I don’t think we may be able to tag too many devices one behind the other. I reckon max 3 or 4 before the tag starts to look awkward, but the color coding on plugs will make it easy to identify which plug belongs to which device.

Getting All Square with Coke

Alright eco-force! Get ready! It’s time to turn Coca Cola into…whaaa? An Earth-friendly means of distributing 20oz of soda! Coke’s always been a sort of futuristic thinking brand, but this would be a big fat huge giant leap forward in the right direction if I do say so myself. It’s a design for a much more reasonable, smart, ergonomic, and gosh darnit, it just looks lovely. It’s so green, it’s 100% plant based. It’s made out of greens! And it’s much more stackable. And cooler!

I’ve overexcited myself.

I need a cool, refreshing Pepsi.

While I write this: The cap is 25% slimmer than the current 20oz bottle, and 27% more efficient because of its drastically reduced footprint. Something I didn’t know about the current PET bottle is it’s 100% recyclable, but that only about 50% of the bottles distributed get recycled. (I would have thought that not nearly that many were reused, I see bottles everywhere all the time.) The bottle you see here is more collapsable than the current one though, encouraging more recycling due to ease in transport. The bottle collapses 66% smaller than its original size. You’re much more likely to hold on to a bottle for later recycling if you can carry it in your pocket.

And the 100% plant make? This bottle is made of 100% sugar cane byproducts. I don’t think it’s as sweet as the good parts of the cane though, just neat.

And I’d better mention again: it’s so stackable!

Foldable Keyboard for Tablets Doubles as Phone Handset

노트북과 연동 되는 핸드폰.. 내 졸작 컨셉이었는데..

아래 작품은 더 세련되게 풀어냈네.. ㅎㅎ

암튼 굳 아이디어!!

This may be a concept, but I want someone to actually make it for any present or future tablet out there: An optional foldable keyboard that acts as phone handset. This is how the it works:

The keyboard is physically independent from the tablet itself, just a peripheral device that you can carry around folded in your pocket. However, it doesn't have any independent functionality. It can only work while connected wirelessly to the tablet. And that's the beauty of it: I can imagine myself carrying the iPad 3G on my backpack, ready to receive calls, and then this cellphone-keyboard in my pocket. In fact, if you add a full screen to its outer shell, it could even act as a secondary display for the tablet. Ah well, maybe in 2012. [Yanko]
