Liberty and Staircase by designer Danny Kuo are the two pieces in hi graduation work from the Design Academy Eindhoven, which was exhibited at the Graduation show 2010 during Dutch Design Week.

Staircase
Building vertically saves space as it uses minimal ground square meters. When it comes to interior design, the same rule can be applied. By focusing on height rather than width, efficient storage designs can be created. Even though this would be more efficient, it does create the problem of making this height accessible. Staircase is a shelving unit that combines a bookshelf with a pullout stair system in the bottom three shelves. The shelving unit is 2.6 meters high and the top shelves are accessible by using the bottom shelves as steps for accessing the higher shelves.

Liberty
Current developments in the lighting industry are changing the way lamps are designed. From the familiar light bulb to fluorescent lamp to LED to OLED. Especially LED and OLED bring freedom, flexibility and adaptability for new lighting. To Danny, minimum size and the related flexibility are most inspiring and interesting.

But how can we benefit from these new qualities? Danny Kuo has designed a lamp that is dynamic and which is functional in different situations. The lamp’s light angle is able to adjust up to 180 degrees and the dimmer offers adjustabilty of the light intensity. These improvements in flexibility make the lamp adaptable for the different contexts of the space in which the lamp is used.

Evolutive Design Collection by Nistor & Nistor

와우 이런거가 정말 내가 만들고자 하는 키네틱 라이팅과 딱 맞는 컨셉인데.. 누가 먼저 해버렸네.

그래도 프로젝트 진행시 많은 도움이 될 작품.!!

Gladys Nistor sent me over photos of the Nistor & Nistor Evolutive Design Collection, which features lamps with elements that can individually rotate up to 360° around their axis and create an infinite variety of shapes. Nistor & Nistor are siblings Gladys and Gabriel who have very different backgrounds: Gladys as a sculptor, and Gabriel as a High Tech Industrial Engineer.

The idea behind their designs was to create a playful and interactive collection that invites the user to reshape it. Gladys says, “The lines where inspired from the concentric unbalances from MAD Architecture on his project ‘Urban Forest,’ combined with the simple elegance on a Coco Channel Nº 5 flacon or the classic smoothness on Artdeco design in general.” Gabriel explains that they also wanted to create a piece that had a longer lifespan that a normal item — “The longer the time the object communicates with you and surprises you, the longer you will want to keep it, which in turn contributes to reduce waste as well as resources consumption levels.”

The collection consists of three lamps: Magna, Opus, and Tempo.

Etch by Tom Dixon

During the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Tom Dixon presented his Etch collection, which was part of his Flash Factory. Visitors could buy a light or candleholder at the stand, or made of brass or stainless steel. The parts were made by employing an industrial process used to produce electronic products, including circuit boards. The patterns were directly etched on the thin metal sheets. This production technique allows the designer to produce a small bath of high-tech products in a very short time. But also the distribution model at the Flash Factory was quite interesting. The objects were offered in 3 versions: a pre-assembled one by one of the Flash Factory workers, or you could assemble it yourself at the stand and the last option was to buy a flat packed one and assemble it at home.

Now Cube This

Hello to you all fans of the epic proportions of the cube. Actually they’re quite regular, aren’t they? Yes. Well, this isn’t. This is totally squaretastic, yet it’s definitely irregular. All sorts of combinations of square stackables put together to make one tower for all! A lamp by the name of “Rubic!” I wonder if you can peg the source of the name on the donkey. I’ll give you a hint – it’s got nothing to with A Clockwork Orange.

There is a toy company called Kubrick, and they definitely ARE giving love to the thought of the famous film director. This lamp we’re talking about NOW though, it’s made to look like a different cube. How stacked can you get? Would you, the speedy cube spinner, be apt to have such a light-giver in your rest-giver? By that I mean living room? Lampsa lamp!

Itre's Karim-Rashid-designed Trex lamp

카림라시드가 디자인 한 벽부조명..

It's new enough that at press time it wasn't yet up on their website, but that's the new Trex lamp designed by Karim Rashid for lighting distributor/manufacturer Itre. The roughly hexagonal Trex is made from acrylic heat-formed with a sort of three-way spine to give it contour, exaggerating both light and shadow across its surface.

The flat metal base mounts to both wall and ceiling, and several Trexes can be ganged up in "clusters and constellations of light." And interestingly enough, the lamp takes two different types of circline flourescent bulbs, one 22-watt and one 40-watt.

New from Pallucco

Pallucco has introduced three new lights to their collection, Bucky, Foglie, and Tabard to be shown at the Milan International Furniture Fair in April.

Bucky
Bucky, designed by the Spanish studio Lagranja, resembles a kite with the soft orange-yellow glow of a firefly. The rods are blown glass and suspended on cables like a tightrope. Bucky pays tribute to Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller, architect, designer and thinker who was the first to experiment with geodesic domes and tensile structures, which have been used to create this lampshade.

Foglie
The natural elegance of the branches of a tree provides the inspiration for the new family of lights called Foglie (“leaves” in English).

Available into three different versions: in the floor version, the stem of the light becomes the tree trunk and the branches are transformed into unusual minimal leaf-like appendages. In the wall light the branches are grafted onto the walls while the ceiling light has leaves hanging down, creating light and shade effects on the walls and surfaces below.

The inspiration for the Foglie design is a fractal: a geometrical shape which is repeated throughout its structure in different sizes. It reflects the principle of nature which determines growth: from simplicity to complexity.

Tabard
Just as Sherlock Holmes is always portrayed with a charming little cloak, so too are the garments hanging on the coat hook protected by a stylish cloak. Tabard was designed by Denis Santachiara, and is inspired by the tabard, a long seamless overcoat which you wrapped around your body. But here the roles are inverted. While traditional coat hooks are covered by clothes, Tabard on the other hand covers the clothes, protecting them from dust, giving this object an original unusual look. Tabard is available into two versions: wall light or floor lamp, which are obtained by joining two cloaks together.

Transforming Nissyoku Solar Eclipse Lamp Powered By LED, Not Fusion [Lamps]

Things I thought of while viewing the solar eclipse-inspired Nissyoku lamp: GLaDOS, a glowing tennis ball and, oh yeah, a solar eclipse:

The designer says that unlike those fleeting solar eclipses we see in the sky, this lamp lasts for up to 10 years.

It's also capable of morphing from one simple shape to the next, and can be suspended from the ceiling, a la a chandelier, or placed on a table, where it will neither burn out your eyes nor damage your table.

The light source, sadly, is not fusion or even fission, but a 5W LED in each of the two panels. [Igendesign via Design Blog]

MORPHOLUMINESCENCE

MorphoLuminesence is a kinetic ceiling prototype, originally described as a simple surface in Rhino. The surface was triangulated into panels or ”petals” using a combination of the PanelingTools plug-in and manual modeling based on a specific tessellation logic. “Morpho” consists of these kinetic petals, laser cut from white acrylic, which hang from stems of clear tubular acrylic with planar elbow joints. The acrylic tubes were laser cut using custom fabricated jigs to create angles and grooves along each piece. The compound joints of each petal were created using unique laser cut acrylic angles and pivoting model airplane hinges. The surface is actuated using monofilament attached to small, high torque servos. The servos are mounted to acrylic towers above the MDF top surface, providing maximum leverage. Variable value RGB LEDs, above the petal surface, are tuned across the visual spectrum to provide a wide variety of lighting effects. The MDF soffit was modeled in Rhino as a network of the stems. Although the original form was a NURBS surface, the tooling patterns and g-code where generated using Mastercam. The preview modes allowed us to tweak the step sizes until we could achieve the right aesthetic. The ridges allowed material to be placed where it was structurally needed to keep the petals stable and fixed. The top of the soffit became the circuit board for the LED’s and base for the servo towers. A series of prototypes informed the shape and structure of the components that create the overall form. Acrylic panels were flexed to their breaking points, fishing line was stressed, and multiple materials were tested for the rigid top surface including, HDF, MDF, Particleboard, and High Density Foam. The surface reacts to people standing and moving beneath it, as Arduino micro-controllers are used to receive infrared sensor data and to control the position of the servos. The sensors detect speed and direction of people in relation to the piece. If a user stands still for a long enough period of time, the petals will retract into the completed surface, but once activated by human occupation, the piece opens and closes pods. __________

Dandelion Lights

Ever had the urge to pick up some dandelions and blow away its wisps? I haven’t either, but looking at this wonderful Secret Of Light –Lamp, I wish I could find some dandelion in my backyard! The lamp works in this simple way, shake it gently to switch it on (motion sensors), and blow onto the bulbs to switch it off. Mimic how you would do with the dandelion, only less vigorously.
