Paduino: control Arduino from iPhone/iPad/iPod touch with the Redpark Serial Cable

Paduino: control Arduino from iPhone/iPad/iPod touch with the Redpark Serial Cable: "

Alasdair Allan, author of iOS Sensor Apps with Arduino, has posted the source code for a couple of apps that are based on the Redpark Serial Cable for iOS, which is available in the Maker SHED as part of the Redpark Breakout Pack for Arduino and iOS:

The cable is a fully MFi approved external accessory that allows home-hobbiests to talk to external hardware, no jailbreak required. On one end of the cable is a dock connector that plugs directly into your iOS device. On the other, is an RS-232 serial port that you can easily connect to anything that speaks a serial protocol.

I’ve been working with the pre-release version of the cable for a couple of months now and I’ve put up some sample code to get you started. Including a rather nifty Universal application for the iPhone and iPad which will let you directly control an Arduino board. I’ve dubbed it the “Paduino.”

Connect your iPhone to the real world (the source code to the projects are available there as well).

One Big Digital Scroll Wheel

One Big Digital Scroll Wheel: "

It’s inevitable, the television is becoming a computer, at least in the sense that it can now access more than just broadcast information. We’re no longer just changing volume and channels. The Baand Remote is a solution to how one might interact with this evolved TV. It’s basically one big scroll wheel. You flick across your content. The gesture is more fluid and intuitive. Everything else happens on a contextual UI that changes based on what you’re doing. Video after the jump.

Squish, Splash, and Waft Lighting

Squish, Splash, and Waft Lighting: "

This series of interactive light objects by Viktor Alexander Kölbig aims to strengthen the relationship between object and user through light sources that not only illuminate the space they occupy but capture the users interest through a variety of unique interfaces and physical interactions like “smooshing” the smooth textile surface of the Seide lamp or stirring water in the Water Light to control power, color, and intensity.

Seide- this lamp develops its fascination the moment you touch the soft, smooth textile interface. Depending on how far it is pushed inside, the user can brighten and dim or turn it off by petting it gently.

Air Light- this lamp is developed to give the user the ability to adjusting the light without touching it. Just the presence of the hand inside the ring is enough to turn it on. A magic color change is triggered when the user simply turns their hand!

Water Light- fascinated by moving water and the reflections of light on the surface, this lamp consists of a light source and container holding water. The water not only spreads the light, but also acts as the interface for adjusting brightness and color. The amount of water added or taken away adjusts the amount of light, and stirring the water with your finger changes the color of the light- just like mixing water colors.

Making A Big Deal Out of Lights & Trash

Making A Big Deal Out of Lights & Trash: "

Solar power and waste disposal is always a winning combination with the green brigade, but unlike some loft concepts, the City Context is a very practical and utilitarian design. It’s the combo of solar powered streetlamps with color-coded dustbins within the shaft of the lamp. Icons on the bin indicate its use and help in garbage segregation in its first level itself.

Garbage collectors operate the open the bin using a magnetic card. So theft, accidental topples and hygiene are tackled at one go. Awesome!

City Context is a 2011 IDEA Award Winner!
