ringO ipad mounting
the 'ringO' integrated holder and mounting system for tablets, by vogel's
based around a tablet holder with a central aluminum ring, the modular 'ringO' system by vogel's
combines device protection with an array of exchangeable stands and mounts, permitting easy viewing of the tablet.
designed to permit use of usb ports, cameras, and other buttons when attached, 'ringO' device holders are available
for iPad, iPad 2 (while permitting use of apple's magnetic screen cover), and samsung's galaxy tab. the cases can be used
on the back of the device to interface with other elements of the 'ringO' system, or placed over its front for safe transport.
the accessory mounts and stands that connect to the 'ringO' holders include the 'wall mount', which screws into the wall
to hang a tablet for easy viewing; 'flex mount', which attaches to a wall but offers full tilt and swivel to offer a range
of viewing positions for the devices; 'car mount', which docks the tablet to the headrest of a carseat,
permitting second-row passengers to use it as a screen; and 'adhesive mount', which functions like the wall mount
but uses a strong adhesive rather than screws to stick to any unpainted, oil-free surface.
a 'table stand' offers a stand for either portrait or landscape viewing, and a 'flip stand' of similar design to apple's screen cover
combines screen protection when not in use, or several viewing angles when folded back.

'wall times', a free iPad application, offers a simple way to transform the iPad
into a multi-city wall clock, kitchen timer, or alarm clock.
the starter pack, which includes a device case and wall mount, is set to retail for 70 USD,
with additional mounts sold individually. vogel's has plans to produce 'ringO' adaptors
for additional tablets in the future.

Ventura SPARC MGS Watch Includes A Micro-Generator To Power Its Digital Bits
By Andrew Liszewski
Kinetic-powered watches that harness the movement of the wearer to wind a spring and keep the mechanical movements running have been around for ages. But watchmaker Ventura has designed a new timepiece, the SPARC MGS set to be unveiled at BaselWorld 2011 in a few weeks, that uses the same mechanisms to power its LCD display and other digital bits.
According to Ventura, throughout an average day the wearer’s movements will turn an oscillating mass (which is visible above the display) about 4,000 times, and via a set of connecting gears these rotations are used to repeatedly tension a spring. Every time the spring is fully tensioned, it releases its force to a built-in micro-generator which generates electricity, keeping the electronic bits running. And while the details are a bit vague at this point, the SPARC MGS apparently also has a slick and improperly spelled EasySkroll system which allows the wearer to navigate the UI by simply moving their wrist. (Which also cleverly encourages them to keep the watch moving and of course powered.)

Design the Future Lecture Series at Carnegie Mellon
Where do world-changing ideas come from? The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon shines a spotlight on design thinking with their Spring lecture series, Design the Future. As Terry Irwin, head of the School of Design, explains, 'hit-or-miss inspirations aside, one of the steadiest sources of innovation today is the mindset best described as 'design thinking.''
Tomorrow night, the second lecture in the series will be presented by Cheryl Heller, communication designer. Her presentation will be about connecting language and design to the project of social innovation. Check out the full schedule after the jump.

Embedded Project by HHD_FUN
In collaboration with Aaajiao (Xu Wenkai), HHD_FUN created a temporary, interactive installation.
From the architects:
Based on the concept of ‘complex systems’ which can observe, perceive and research our living world, society and biology. Virtual architecture is embedded into various cities and regions within Google earth projected onto the floor, within the internal space of the installation. Motion sensors track the movement of the audience within the internal space, and the projectors respond according to these inputs. By using this interactive technology, members of the audience can trigger and control the projected scene by changing the displacement of their own body or altering the distance between each other within the projective regions. The audiences are provided with unusual perspectives to view the globe, our city, open fields, as well as the algorithmic architectures embedded into the Google Earth projection.
This system establishes an evident but uncertain logical relationship between the movement of people, visual experience and “urban messages”. The audience can observe the process of urban change within the projection.
Design
The faces of the box were designed using a recursion algorithm, based upon a triangular fractal pattern. Each triangle is sub-divided or ‘cracked’ again and again to create smaller and smaller triangles and a denser pattern. At each stage, two out of the three segments are cracked, so that one large segment remains intact to create variation in scale across the surface. At each cracking, the new triangles are raised, perpendicularly by 12cm to create the three-dimensional, surface pattern on the faces of the installation.Abandoning traditional architectural design methodology and using this computational algorithm, the artists (architects) seek to challenge the traditional top-down design method. Connecting the logic of the algorithm and its execution process with physical architecture can generate unexpected results. To visualize these results, the generated digital data (the three-dimensional architectural models) are embedded into the Google Earth projections. Hence the installation design is virtually-embedded within its own physical, architectural manifestation.

Moving Library
The Giro One is a shelf + side table stand, where you can flaunt your library, rest your coffee cup and show off your knick-knacks. I love the way you can interact with the modules by twirling them up and down the center axis, making it much easier to adjust the height to suit your style. Complimenting the design is a set of LED lamps at the top. It adds just the right amount of sophistication and functionality.
